SAT Math Test

Today, I will talk about the SAT Math Test.

SAT Math test consists of two sections -

  1. No Calculator
  2. Calculator
The time limit for this section is 80 minutes(25 minutes + 55 minutes).

I will discuss the two sections in brief -

  1. No Calculator section - The time limit for this section is 25 minutes. The student needs to solve 20 questions in this time limit.
  2. Calculator section - The time limit for this section is 55 minutes. The student needs to solve 38 questions in this time limit.
In the SAT Math test, most of the questions are Multiple choice questions(MCQs). But, few questions are grid-ins. In these questions, the student needs to solve the questions and enter the answer in the grids provided in the answer sheet. Here is an example -

The questions in this test, usually, are of following topics -

  • Heart of Algebra (includes topics like linear inequalities, linear equations in two variable etc.)
  • Problem Solving and Data Analysis (includes topics like ratio and proportion, exponential growth, data collection, probability etc.)
  • Passport to Advanced Mathematics (includes topics like quadratic equations, polynomial expressions, functions etc.)
  • Additional topics like Trigonometry, Geometry, Complex Numbers etc.
In Calculator section, students can use a graphical or a scientific calculator. But I prefer students to use a scientific calculator because students wouldn't require a graphical calculator much. But, if the student is comfortable with the graphical calculator, he/she can take it.

Students should remember that they should take only those scientific/graphical calculators which have been approved by the College Board. To see the list of the calculators approved by the College Board, visit the official website of the College Board.

Few people on Quora asked me about the calculator which I used in my SAT exam. I used the Casio fx-991ES Plus calculator.

For more info about the SAT Math test, students can visit Khan Academy and College Board.

I will soon upload the sample test for the SAT Math test.

Till then,
